Reds Battle Arlington in Inaugural WPSL Match
Alexandria, Virginia (May 19, 2024)—After a close-fought match, Arlington’s Avery Hallam and Alyssa Keneally scored as the Reds fell 0-3.
Hallam scored in the 27th minute, with a nice run out of midfield, to put Arlington up 1-0 at the half. Shortly into the second half, Hallam buried another goal for her team on Sunday afternoon at Episcopal High School.
After minimal shots on goal in the first half, both teams settled in and connected passes, resulting in attacking opportunities for both sides.
In the 81st minute, Alyssa Keneally pressured the goalkeeper to force a turnover and found the back of the net, making it 3-0.
Reds winger Grace Metzler, and forward Nicole Cargill were key players for the Reds, helping create passes in behind the Arlington back line. The Reds back line was solid across the board and chemistry will continue to grow as the team trains together over the coming weeks.
The Alexandria Reds sit at 0-1 as they enter the league. With the three goal win, Arlington is now 2-0 in WPSL play this summer and currently lead the District Division.
Reds Coach, Scott Senkier commented after the game, “It was great to play our first match together with a lot of new players in the squad and build some chemistry. Obviously, we'd love a different result, but Arlington was great defensively.”
“I'm excited for the rest of the season and we'll be able to get some much needed training reps over the next few weeks," Senkier continued.
The Alexandria Reds women will take the field at home again on Sunday, June 16 vs UK FC at home.
